14 Day Ireland Self-Drive day-by-day

Day 1: Arrival Day Dublin 

  • Arrive in Dublin Airport collect your vehicle
  • Drive into the city, checking in to your accommodation
  • After freshening up, enjoy an Open Top Bus Tour of Ireland’s Capital City
  • Take a lively Walking Tour of City Centre
  • In the afternoon, visit one of Ireland’s major attractions, The Guinness Storehouse

Day 2: Waterford City via Kilkenny City

  • Early start after Breakfast, the first day proper on your 14 Day Ireland Self-Drive
  • Then a great trip awaits with early morning stops at Glendalough in stunning County Wicklow
  • Drive over the Wicklow National Park into Ireland’s ‘Medieval Capital’ Kilkenny, enjoy lunch after a tour of the famous 12th century Kilkenny Castle in Ireland’s old Capitol
  • Travel south to Waterford City, stopping at Walsh’s stunning Whiskey Distillery
  • Into Waterford City for the Viking Experience
  • Check-in and freshen up
  • Head out for dinner and in the evening choose from one of the many pubs and restaurants Waterford has to offer

Day 3: Killarney

  • Busy day spectacular drive ahead, but first Breakfast
  • Drive along the south coast of Ireland, the Copper Coast is approx 120 miles, toward Killarney
  • Stop in Cobh, then Cork City and Blarney Castle for some local sightseeing
  • Choose from a selection of visitor experiences, Jameson Midleton Experience or Blarney Castle
  • Lunch in Blarney and then a relaxing drive to Kerry
  • Head out over the Cork and Kerry mountains and down into Killarney
  • Check-in, freshen up
  • Short drive to Ross Castle and take a first glimpse of the stunning lakes and most romantic castle in Ireland
  • Out for dinner in the many restaurants around Killarney
  • Then enjoy a drink in Kelly’s or the Porterhouse for an evening of trad music or early bed

Day 4: Ring of Kerry

  • Not to early rise but a fine Breakfast first!
  • Get ready for a fabulous day of scenic views on the Ring of Kerry
  • Take the 100 mile winding coastal drive consisting of beautiful beaches, cliffs, waterfalls, mountains and iconic landscapes
  • Head out to Kenmare, stopping at Torc Waterfall and take in the stunning Ladies View of the Lakes
  • If you are a Star Wars fan gaze out at the famous Skellig Michael where Star Wars VII was filmed
  • Pause for a stroll around Sneem, with its brightly painted houses
  • Gaze from Moll’s Gap for panoramic views of Ireland’s highest mountains and deep valleys
  • Drive around the Ring of Kerry and divert onto the Skellig Ring to experience the Wild Atlantic Way in all its stunning glory
  • Enjoy another evening in Killarney to sample the local pubs and eateries.

Day 5: Cong via Galway

  • Another long drive ahead, plan your day over another stunning Irish Breakfast
  • Leave Killarney early morning and drive north to Tarbert for a 20-minute ferry ride across the wide River Shannon Estuary
  • Continue along the coast of County Clare to the Cliffs of Moher, a spectacular wall of sandstone that reaches almost 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean
  • On the way, drive past Lahinch, one of Ireland’s most famous locations, the cliffs of Kilkee and finally Doolin
  • Doolin is world-famous for its wealth of Irish folk music and in recent years has been attracting crowds to spontaneous sessions in any one of its excellent pubs
  • Take a Sea Cruise out on the Wild Atlantic to the base of the Cliffs of Moher
  • Lunch and then a long drive ahead
  • Follow Clare’s stunning coast to Galway via the lunar like Burren Region and the ancient Castle ruins of this once great kingdom
  • Drive throough tiny villages of Fanore, Ballyvaughan, Dunaguire Castle, around Galway city
  • Up through Connemara into Oughterard, stop for coffe and sight seeing at stunning Aughnanure Castle
  • Drive onto Maam cross and onto Cong
  • Dinner and long rest in Hotel

Day 6: Connemara

  • Today, the beautiful Connemara Region awaits you. Situated west of Galway on the most western seaboard of Europe, you will get to experience breath taking scenery featuring rugged, unpolluted coastline, dramatic mountains, numerous lakes and rivers and woodlands and the renowned Connemara National Park. Visit Kylemore Abbey and the Lough Inagh Valley as well as the spectacular Sky Road near the town of Clifden. You can also visit the fishing village of Roundstone and see how a ‘Bodhran’ (traditional Irish Drum) is made. Today you have an option of choosing either a “Connemara Lady” catamaran cruise or take “The Quiet Man” walking tour of Cong.

Day 7: Connemara to Westport

  • From Cong, after Breakfast!
  • Hit the wild mountain roads into north Connemara, stop at Killary harbour and take the catamaran cruise through Ireland’s only fjord.
  • A short drive to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens
  • Then a short drive to Diamond Hill and views of Connemara few see
  • After Lunch head north through stunning Doough Lough and Valley, this is a breathtaking drive
  • Head to Louisburgh diverting to one of the Wild Atlantic Ways hidden secrets, the beach of Killadoon
  • Travel north past Croagh Patrick, otherwise known as Ireland’s ‘Holy Mountain’ upon which St. Patrick spent 40 days fasting
  • The area around Croagh Patrick is rich in archaeological remains, like nearby Murrisk Abbey
  • Head into picturesque Westport, Check-in and head out to dinner in the many beautiful restaurants
  • An evening in Molloy’s Trad Bar is well worth the experience
  • Relax and reflect at the half-way point of your 14 Day Ireland Self-Drive trip

Day 8: Westport – Achill Island

  • Relaxing Breakfast, and then a stunning day ahead
  • Leaving Westport for Achill island along Clew bay, first stop is Burrishoole Abbey, set in lovely quiet countryside adjacent to a still river
  • Continue along the route to Mullranny, and then on to Achill sound, a short stop at Kildevit Castle seat of the O’Malley Clan and the clans greatest chiftain the Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley hero of song and deed
  • Drive over the bridge onto Achill island itself, the drive across the island is very dramatic, sweeping, and wild, a mix of great ocean views and high mountain passes
  • Onwards to Keem beach, a stunning blue star beach, ideal place for a swim on a hot summers day
  • Take a cliff walk and you will understand way this is the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way
  • Drive back to Westport for the evening and enjoy this wonderful town, voted best town in Ireland in 2012

Day 9: Donegal

  • Morning start, after Breakfast, drive towards the hills of Donegal
  • Take the Erris coastal road for easily the best road trips in Ireland
  • Up around Erris Head across a wild coastal road, stopping at the ancient Ceide Fields Visitor Centre a neolithic series of fields structures unlike anywhere else in the world
  • On to Downpatrick Head, the Wild Atlantic Ways best iconic stops
  • Lunch in Sligo Town
  • Into Donegal and onto Teelin to visit the stunning awe inspiring Sliabh League Cliffs highest in Europe
  • Drive over stunning mountian passes into the heart of Donegal where lies the Glenveagh National Park and is considered by many to be Ireland’s finest national park
  • Travelling further on north, stop at the mysterious hill top fort of An Grianan of Aileach, ancient seat of the Kings of Ulster and West Scotland
  • Finally into the City of Derry where we have organized a Bogside Tour and do take a walk the around the walls of the city before you enjoy your evening meal and live Irish music

Day 11: Giants Causeway

  • A not to early start, but you will want Breakfast!
  • Taking the stunning Causeway coast there is so much to see on this exotic stunning drive
  • A first stop in Bushmills Distillery, Ireland’s oldest
  • Look out for the glorious Mussenden Temple overlooking the 9 mile long Benone Strand
  • Heading East take in the ruins of medieval Dunluce Castle, seat of the MacDonnells of the Route, teetering out over the ocean
  • Breathe in the fresh air at the beaches of Portrush or Portstewart
  • From here travel to the Giant’s Causeway, the Causeway was formed 70,000,000 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption
  • From here, make sure to walk the stunning Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge spans a gaping chasm between the coast and a small island used by fishermen
  • The coastal road to Belfast has spectacular views so have the cameras at the ready
  • Divert inland to visit the Game of Thrones iconic Dark Hedges
  • Arriving that evening to give you plenty of time for to stroll around Belfast City, check-in, and have dinner in the City’s vibrant Cathedral Quarter
  • An evening in the Duke of York will ease your driving legs

Day 12: Belfast

  • For once a late rise but still that all important Breakfast
  • Belfast City is full of history, culture and friendly locals inspiring the likes of Chronicles of Narnia
  • We have arranged a Black Cab Political Tour to pick you up in the morning at reception where our driver guide will give you an interesting insight into this cities history
  • That afternoon after lunch, visit The Titanic Belfast Experience, telling the story of the famous ill-fated HMS Titanic
  • Browse in the St Georges Market
  • Drive out to Carrickfergus Castle
  • Dinner agian in Belfast and relaxing evening in the hotel

Day 13: Newgrange

  • Leaving Belfast after Breakfast
  • South towards Dublin, you will get a chance to visit one of the great wonders of the ancient world, Newgrange
  • Newgrange, is a 5,200 year old passage tomb located in the Boyne Valley in Ireland’s Ancient East
  • Not far from Newgrange is Trim Castle, the castle, on the shores of the Boyne, is one of the largest Norman castles in Europe
  • Just north of here lies The Hill of Tara, located near the River Boyne, this ancient site contains monuments, and, according to tradition, was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland
  • Drive to Dublin and check-in, freshen up
  • Enjoy a mixture of music song and dance with our Live Traditional Irish Dance show & farewell Dinner

Day 14

  • Enjoy a Full Irish Breakfast, to get you sorted for the day ahead as we say goodbye and wish you a safe journey home
