Description of Self-Drive


Day 1: Arrival – Dublin

Transfer to City. Check In to your accommodation, enjoy an open top bus tour of Ireland’s Capital City. In the afternoon, choices from Ireland’s Literary Museum, Chester Betty Library or the Epic Immigration Museum. Indulge yourself in Dublin’s marvellous bars and restaurant culture as Dublin awaits discovery.

Day 2: Dublin – Explore

Take a wonderful personalised Walking tour exploring Dublin’s rich history of renowned people and places, women and men who defied and brought an empire to its knees. All the while enjoying the playful atmosphere of its lively bars and restaurants.

Day 3: Antrim – Tara – Beaghmore – Ballintoy

Collect car form City Centre and head out on your adventure! First stop is the Hill of Tara, a brisk walk across this ancient spiritual place. Visit the raggy tree and tie a momento of a loved one to branches for the fairies. Head next to mighty Trim Castle by far largest castle in Ireland. Stare out over a timeless landscape and imagine you are king or queen of all you survey. Head up north a stop at Belturbet and onto the mysterious Beaghmore Stone Circle. Head to Antrim and a short stop at the Dark Hedges before a welcome meal and rest in the lively Fullerton Arms. An evening in the Fullerton session lounge beckons as you unwind.

Day 4: Derry – Causeway Coast – Inishowen

A busy day ahead, take the Causeway coast, start with the inspiring nerve tingling Carrick-a-reade rope bridge, onto Dunluce Castle as its awe-inspiring location. Travel to the Giants Causeway, stop for coffee and onto to Magilligan for short ferry to Inishowen. Relax for lunch in Buncrana and head up to majestic Malin Head, a beautiful waterfall, wide open road over the Inishowen gap. Back in a loop in Londonderry (Derry) City for check in and dinner. Still time to take a short spin and hike to catch the last rays of sunshine on the mytical ancient Ui Neill Capitol An Grianan of Aileach. Back into Derry for an evening of music in the Sandino Bar.

Day 5: Donegal – Errigal – Sliabh League

The longest drive yet but what a drive. Head south through the beautiful awe inspiring Gleanveagh National Park with its towering Errigal peak lording over the beautiful Highlands of Donegal. Head up over the Barnesmore gap where the mighty Northern Clans would gather to defend their territory in days long gone. Head into the Glenties and lunch in Teelin Village, check Into the Rusty Mackeral and head up Sliabh League to walk on top of the majestic soaring Sliabh League Cliffs – highest in Europe. Back down for beautiful dinner, trad session and bed in the oddly named Rusty Mackeral!

Day 6: Westport – Knocknarea – Downpatrick Head

Of to Westport on the way a stop to pay homage to a ruthless fearsome Irish Queen Meave and another later fearsome Pirate Clan Leader Grainne Mhaol (Grace O’Malley) who humbled many a foe with her 12 man-o-war fleet raiding the Western Atlantic. Along this way are empty roads with spectacular scenery. This is the finest drive on the island. Climb majestic Knocknarea, stand tall at Downpatrick head and see and feel the power of the Wild Atlantic in full rage. Drive through the boglands of Bangor Erris and head south to Achill Island and Westport.

Day 7: Galway City – Connemara

Galway City is a great place to chill out, a vibrant young city, Ireland’s cultural capitol. An ancient city full of medieval and modern wonders, street theatre, busking, trad sessions in the many bars, take the whiskey trails enjoy the food. Head north to the mighty fortress of Aughnanure Castle, through Connemara’s beautiful landscape, onto Kylemore Abbey and deep mysterious landscape of Killiary Fjord. Head south to climb Diamond Hill for spectacular views. Journey through the coastal landscape of the Connemara to the awesome Bunowen Castle. Head into Galway city for music and craic!

Day 8: Clare – Explore Burren – Cliffs of Moher

Clare – Beautiful Clare – head into Clare into a wild strange landscape of bare exposed rock. Undulating hills of stone, tiny colourful thriving villages with lovely restaurants, cafes and bars offer food, drink and entertainment to suit all tastes. Out to the tiny fishing port of Doolin, nestling at the foot of Cliffs of Moher. After lunch head up the cliff path for majestic views up on top of Cliffs of Moher observe the wild Atlantic way and all it has to offer. Wait for sunset and be awe inspired. Head down to Doolin for a wonderful meal and enjoy an evening in legendary Gus O’Connors.

Day 9: Clare – Ferry to Inishmore 

Take a ferry out the Atlantic observe the huge canyon’s of Rock rising from the raging sea. Catch glimpses of dolphins and whales as you head out to Inishmore largest of the Aran Islands. Take a bike ride up to majestic Dun Aengus atop a huge cliff this remarkable stone age fortress offers spectacular views. Head back to Doolin for dinner and an evening of revelry in its many Irish music bars.

Day 10: Dingle – Slea Head

From Clare over the Killimer to Tarbart car ferry into Kerry affectionately known as the Kingdom! Head south to Tralee and on out to Dingle. This finger of land called dingle is a place of stunning beauty, around Brandon head for heart stopping roads head up over the soaring Connor Pass and stop and touch the sky! Head down into the small fishing town of Dingle! After check in and lunch take the majestic Slea Head Drive, stop at Dun Chaoin and walk out to Sybil Head and hear its tragic tale. Take a view of the far off skelligs and distant Iveragh with its tall peaks shrouded in cloud. Take the plunge in the awesome beach of Ventry and refreshed head back to Dingle. For a beautiful night in this lively town enjoy food, drink and craic!

Day 11: Dingle – Chill out – Night Kayak

Park the car for a day, take a day browsing this small town. Artisan cottages full of pottery, galleries, music. Beautiful hand-made ice creams, chocolates and a trip to wonderful Dingle Distillery. Take a boat ride out to see Funge the resident dingle Dolphin this wonderful wild creature has made Dingle his home. As the sunsets time to take to the water yourself in a Kayak/canoe and watch as the sea comes to life in the moonlight. Head back into the town for dinner and another evening of delight!

Day 12: Bantry – Mizen Head – Stone Circles

Leaving Dingle behind head to Kenmare and on to Ailihies and Eyeries Village these tiny remote villages are a joy to behold, neatling in stunning landscapes. Onto Mizen Head Irelands most easterly headland. Take the iron bridge over the soaring raging Atlantic and into the Lighthouse and visitor centre for a coffee in the most beautiful place on earth! Head south to Dunbeg Stone Circle lay a coin as an offering and on into Bantry for Dinner and evening entertainment.

Day 13: Kilkenny – Rock of Cashel – Jerpoint Abbey

A long drive today! From Bantry head northeast through Kanturk and over Cork and Kerry Mountains. The Healy pass is a wonderful drive and then you enter Ireland’s green valleys and rich pastures of the Golden Vale. Head to majestic Rock of Cashel – ancient seat of the Eoganacht Tribe who this land for 700 years their last King was Cormac who betrayed chose to fight his enemies in the terrible battle of Ballymoon. See the citadel of their power towering above the green landscape, its turrets, castle and cathedral explore this wonderful ancient place. Next stop as you head towards Kilkenny is a lunch in Clonmel and then on to Jerpoint Abbey this beautiful place is a wonder to behold. Finally before you enter Medieval Kilkenny is a stop at dark sinister Dunmore caves. In 10th century Vikings massacred 1000 people sheltering in the caves. Now open to public you can view the awesome Staligtites and Staligmites. On into Kilkenny for late lunch and check-in. A short walk to Kilkenny Castle and the Smithwicks Brewery Experience. Enjoy eveningmeal in Alice Kyeteler Inn haunt of the witch Alice. Enjoy a relaxing evening in this beautiful town.

Day 14: Dublin – Farewell!

Onto Dublin a short drive, drop of luggage and check in at hotel, drop off Car and enjoy an evening of relaxation and entertainment in Ireland’s, a last meal in Pichet Restaurant and a farewell drink in the many hostelries in Dublin.

Time to say farewell to the emerald isle!
